About Richard Sammis

Hi, I'm Richard Sammis.

I’ve worked as a criminal defense lawyer for many years, with sixteen murder cases under my belt, which has given me a deep understanding of the justice system and a passion for defending the rights of individuals. Alongside my legal career, I’ve also been an educator, teaching political science at a local college, where I’ve had the privilege of shaping the minds of future leaders. My diverse interests don’t stop there. I’ve been actively involved in Community Theater, both as a performer and as a playwright. Over the years, I’ve authored two plays, with the first one also being directed and produced by me. The theater has allowed me to express my creativity and connect with people in unique ways. When I’m not performing or working, I enjoy playing guitar and singing at local clubs, where I can share my love for music with others.

About

My novel, Joshua and the Late Police, is set in a summer camp, a place that holds special meaning to me. The story is inspired by my twelve summers spent as both a camper and counselor at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha in northern Michigan, which shaped much of my view on community, personal growth, and the impact of mentorship. Additionally, over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting many international guests and students, which has played a significant role in inspiring the multicultural aspects of my writing. It has allowed me to bring diverse perspectives into my work, enriching the story and making it more relatable to a broader audience.

I majored in English Composition at DePauw University, where I had the opportunity to study under the accomplished writer John Jakes. His mentorship greatly influenced my writing style and approach to storytelling. After completing my degree, I graduated from the Ohio Northern University College of Law and am a proud member of the Michigan Bar Association. This legal background informs much of my work, offering a unique perspective on human nature, justice, and the law.

I now live in St. Joseph, Michigan, with my loyal dachshund Abbey, just a short walk from the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan. My love for the outdoors extends beyond the beach, and I’m an active member of my local Rotary Club, where I contribute to various community initiatives. When I’m not writing or working, you can often find me cycling or kayaking around the area, enjoying the natural beauty that Michigan has to offer.

Through my experiences as a lawyer, educator, playwright, and outdoors enthusiast, I bring a unique blend of knowledge, creativity, and passion to everything I do. My work is not just about telling stories—it’s about connecting with people, sharing experiences, and making a positive impact on those around me.
